 It seems that quite recently – a quarter of a century ago – spears were broken about Lenin. Hero or villain, has he helped or harmed Russia? – not only historians were ready to argue about it in the newspapers, at the table and even at the bus stop. No consensus was reached, but the debates stopped. Now the focus is on Stalin and those phenomena of the 1930s, the very name of which already shows on which side of the barricade the person who mentions them is fighting.

 In the second half of the 20th century in Russia a new system of professional mining supervision began to operate. The district engineers, who carried out this supervision, were vested with a variety of control functions, including overseeing the timely payment of salaries to mining workers.

 The article focuses on spatial analysis of Perm province’s commercial and manufacturing development in the early 20th century. Perm province, the biggest and most eastern province in European Russia, occupied a vast territory of 332.000 sq km and had a population of almost 3 mln people according to the 1897 census.

 The Tale of How Dmitry Vasilievich Quarreled with Rostislav Aleksandrovich: the Activities of the Authorities of the Far East Under Conditions of Grain Crisis of 1905 (Based on Materials From the Russian State Historical Archive of the Far East)

 The article discusses the activities of the authorities of the Far East under conditions of the grain crisis of 1905 that arose in connection with the Japanese-Russian War of 1904–1905. The key reason for the crisis was the Manchurian army Commander-in-Chief A.N. Kuropatkin’s ban on the export of grain from Manchuria for the needs of population of the Far East.

 October 18, 1905: one day in the fate of the Perm Governor A.P. Naumov

 On October 18, 1905 in the city of Perm there were riots on the occasion of the announcement of October Manifesto. Striking railway workers decided to stop the strike and go to serve a prayer in the health of Emperor Nicholas II. Perm Governor Alexander Petrovich Naumov allowed such a mass gathering of people to pass through the streets of the city. But a police officer Ivanov was not notified of the Manifesto of 17 October 1905 and the order of the Governor.

 The article is devoted to the study of problematic aspects of interaction between military censorship and representatives of the Russian and foreign press in Manchuria during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. The research is based on the materials of military correspondents, citizens of Russia, France, German, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, published after their authors left the theater of war, as well as on the archival documents of the foreign and military departments of Russia.

Being located in different regions of the Russian Empire, these districts could face different challenges and difficulties in their activities. The purpose of the article is to find out whether this factor influenced the course of preparation and its results or not.

 Old Dwellers, Migrants and the Emperor’s Cabinet: a Triangle of Contradictions at Altai in the 1910s

 The article analyses the main contradictions in the sphere of land use in the Altai district in the 1910s. Their main participants were the Emperor’s Cabinet, old resident peasants and migrants who settled in the old-residents’ villages. Analyzing several conflict cases the author Identifies three main types of contradictions between land use participants in the region.

 Old Popularity of Peasant Superiors’ Judicial Functions Among Peasants of the Tomsk Province in the Early 20th Century

 The article considers judicial functions in the activities of peasant superiors of the Tomsk Province after the introduction in 1898 of the “Temporary Regulation on Peasant Chiefs in the Provinces of Tobolsk, Tomsk, Yeniseisk and Irkutsk”. The creation of this institution was intended to establish a uniform and effective mechanism for the collection of duties and control over all spheres of activity of the peasantry.

 Plagiarism as a Way of Preserving a Scientific Result: an Unexpected Case from the History of Pre-Revolutionary Study of the Russian Old Believers

 A small story discovered while studying historiography of the 17th century Russian church schism and of the Old Believers appeared strikingly vital in the epoch of hunt for scientific citations and fight against “improper borrowings” of scientific texts. It is on the article published at 1914 that the currently circulating information is largely based that concerns biography of the monk Avraamii (burned in 1672) – the former holy fool Athanasius, an Old Believer polemic writer, contemporary and follower of Archpriest Avvakum.
