In Search of a Better Life:
Population Migration in the East of the Country

Contents

В поисках лучшей жизни: миграции населения на востоке страныFrom the Editor

The thematic issue of the journal includes articles considering various aspects of the migration movement of population over the territory of modern Russia and abroad, starting from ancient times and up to the present. The study of the demographic development of the country and its regions is of great scientific interest, since it allows us to answer many topical questions of the socio-economic and even political development of Russian society. The practical significance of such research is obvious, since the study of the causes, scale, sources, and territorial directions of migration makes it possible to assess the consequences of modern decisions of central and regional authorities. In the post-Soviet period, historical research on migration has become much more active, and this issue continues the long-established tradition existing at the Institute of History SB RAS of publishing works by domestic and foreign authors that are devoted to the study of retrospective demographic processes.

The year 1930, marked the beginning of unprecedented forced migrations of the peasant population within an officially non-war country, is now recognized by most professional historians as the part of the strategy of the forced transfer of governing institutions and the Soviet population to a mobilization regime of functioning, which was necessary for radical solution of the ‘agrarian and peasant question’ for state accelerated modernization.

Korean Guerilla Against Japanese Aggression in Manchuria (1931–1937)

The version of the beginning of the Second world war on September 1, 1939 is a reflection of the Eurocentric view of history and world politics. According to Chinese historians, the global conflict began with the Japanese aggression against China in July 1937. In Japanese historical science, the period since 1931 (the invasion of Manchuria) to 1945 is usually called the military fifteen, in this context, according to the Japanese version, the Second world war in the far East began in 1931.

The author analyzes the migration of the urban population of the Angara region over more than 20 years. Migration processes in the cities of the Irkutsk region during the period from 1998 to 2020 were active and contradictory.  The last decade of the 20th and the beginning of the 21th centuries for the South Russian region was tragic not only in terms of the socio-economic situation, but also physical survival: military operations, terrorist attacks and, as a result, powerful flows of forced migrants. Among the host territories, an important place belongs to the Stavropol Territory, which has several advantages: the agrarian region, a multi-ethnic community.

Functions of the Migrant Home: Russian-Speakers in Finland

The necessity to have a shelter is one of the most important human needs. When people go abroad for a long time, they take with them things that will help them master a new space, make it comfortable, while at the same time preserving what is dear in their past life with their presence. While changing themselves, they transform their surroundings, either wishing to integrate or emphasize their identity, or creating varying extensions of their new identity, which may reflect both the former and the dominant culture around them or some third culture.
