From the Editor
In the articles presented in this issue of the journal, the authors focus their attention on the study of the problems of Russian Orthodoxy of the 16th –20th centuries. The topic included in the title of this issue of the journal brought together representatives of the broadest subject and problem areas of various fields of humanities: historians, philologists, source scientists, and historiographers, archaeographers, textologists, and art historians who are specialists in the study of medieval Russia, the Russian Empire, and the recent Soviet past. Another consolidating point was the research principles professed by the authors of the articles, which are based on a comprehensive analysis of documentary and narrative sources, both well-known and first introduced into scientific circulation.

The Tale of Fortune, the “Wheel of Luck”, in the Russian Publicistic Writing of the 16th Century (Starets Filofey, Maximus the Greek, Metropolitan Daniil)
The author analyzes the writings of ecclesiastical writers, who disproved the concepts of mantic astrology and propagated the Christian idea of Divine Providence as a righteous action aimed at the good of humans and at prevention of the evil and of the “absolute human rule”. In Moscow Rus, stargazing (astrology) was actively spread in the first decades of the 17th century by Nikolay Bulev.

The author develops a view of Andrei Borisov as a person who, according to R.O. Crammey, “lived in two cultural worlds”.

Law Enforcement Agencies and the Clergy in the 19th – early 20th Centuries: Coordination Problems (Based on Materials from the Olonets Province)
The article is devoted to the problems of interaction between the clergy and the police. The source base includes judicial investigation records from the fonds of the Consistory and the police department, as well as Russian legislation. It was revealed that in the daily cooperation of the officers of the law and clergy, a number of significant directions were formed along which coordination of efforts took place.
