From the Editor
This issue of the journal is devoted to the study of evolution of the social status of women and their role in culture and society. This topic includes a wide range of questions and is currently being actively developed in both foreign and Russian historiography. For more than ten years in Russia the Association of researchers of women's history (RAIZHI), created on the initiative of N.L. Pushkareva, has been successfully developing. It integrates several dozens of professional scientists from different fields of knowledge, annually sharing their experiences at large national and international scientific forums.

In pre-revolutionary Russia it was extremely difficult for women to show their abilitiesand attract any noticeable attention of contemporaries. For the most part, they remained a weakshadow of their husband, completely dependent on them, which fully corresponded to thepatriarchal and Domostroi traditions of family life, sanctified by the Church foundations ofmarriage.

Ivan Dmitrievich Yakushkin and Princess Natalya Dmitrievna Shcherbatova: to the Prehistory of the Moscow Conspiracy of 1817
The article is devoted to an important period of I.D. Yakushkin’s biography, preceding the events of the Moscow conspiracy of the Decembrists in 1817. The article presents the reasons why I.D. Yakushkin volunteered to kill the emperor. The personal crisis of the Decembrist of the period of 1817, which was the result of his unhappy love for Princess N.D. Shcherbatova.

The article is devoted to the study of the biography of A.K. Medvednikova, a representative of Irkutsk merchant families of Sibiryakovs аnd Medvednikovs. Charitable activity of A.K. Medvednikova is considered as a manifestation of one of the gender and generational models of philanthropy of the 19th century. It was typical for women of the merchant class of the age cohort born in the 1810–1820s.

The Contribution of Merchants A.I. Gromova, A.A. Bushuyeva, A.E. Nadeina to the Social Life of North-Eastern Siberia in the Second Half of the 19th – Early 20th Century
The article analyzes the contribution of the Irkutsk merchants of the 1-st guild A.I. Gromova to the social development of North-Eastern Siberia in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. It is noted that the public awareness raising activities of the Siberian merchants in the remote areas of the north and north-east of the region had its own characteristics. The population of the region needed to maintain the spiritual mood, education, cultural education.

Women’s Petitions of the Second Half of the 17th Century from the Archives of the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery and the Vologda Bishop’s House
This work introduces into scientific circulation the documents of the second half of the 17th century, initiated by women. They were found in the fonds of the Tikhvin Assumption monastery and the Vologda Archbishop’s house. These sources contain information about various life situations in which a woman found herself: violence, fights, inheritance of property, monastic tonsure.

Journey of Marfa N. Kandinskaya from Kyakhta to Moscow in 1851
The article analyzes the manuscript diary of the Selenginsk merchant Marfa Nikitichna Kandinskaya (b. Sabashnikova). The diarist’s social background makes the document under investigation unique, while the text itself is indicative of the level of education and range of interests of women from the merchant circle, reflecting their world view.

Since the late 18th century albums became an integral part of the lives of educated families in Russia. In Siberia album culture appeared in the first half of the 19th century. Many Russian travellers who went to Europe brought professional artists with them, or acquired lithographs with views of places they visited.

The article represents the publication of letters of Maria Nikolaevna Sleptsova (nee Lavrov) to a famous scientist and revolutionary Peter Alekseevich Kropotkin and his wife Sophia Grigoryevna in 1913–1920s. The author of the letters was linked with Kropotkin by a long acquaintance, close friendship and family ties (her aunt on her mother’s side was the wife of his brother).

The article deals with one of the aspects of the everyday life of the Orthodox parish clergy – behavior in the area of kinship relationship. The archive documents from the facilities of Orenburg ecclesiastical consistory and Orenburg diocesan poor clergymen care organization provide insight into drama that occurred in the latter half of the 19th century in the family of the Chelyabinsk archpriest Nikolay Vassilyevich Krechetov.
