The Image of N.N. Muraviov-Karssky in English-Language Historiography of the Crimean War of 1853–1856

Those historians of the Crimean War who write in English usually pay scant attention to the events and actors not related directly to the progress of war in the Crimean peninsula. N.N. Muraviov-Karssky, who commanded the Separate Corps of the Caucasus from 1854 to 1856, is among those neglected. Considering this, it is all the more relevant that the mere four publications that cover general Muraviov’s activities in any detail still manage to offer completely different perspectives on the subject. This difference is especially evident in the early works by W.E.D Allen, P. Muratoff, and J.S. Curtiss, especially since these authors had relied on the uncritical retelling of different primary sources. This fact, however, only makes the later works by C. Badem. M. Uyar, and E.J. Erickson even more noteworthy, as they display a more comprehensive and even analytical approach. Considering this, the coverage of N.N. Muraviov’s activities as the Viceroy of the Caucasus illustrates the evolution of the historiography of the Crimean War while also reminding of the importance of combining historical and military expertise in studying military history.
