Sources on the History of Spiritual Culture of Russia of the 16th – 20th CenturiesFrom the Editor

The history of the spiritual culture of Russia is one of the most popular topics in the research of domestic and foreign humanities. In this issue, the main attention is traditionally paid to various types of written historical and literary sources on this topic, covering the period from the late Middle Ages and almost to the present day. We understand spiritual culture in its broadest interpretation – as various manifestations of the spiritual life of a person and society, including knowledge, ideas, worldview, beliefs, beliefs and embodied in various monuments of human activity. To cover all the components of spiritual culture in one issue of our magazine is an unaffordable task. The authors of the articles devoted their research to a narrower range of scientific problems, primarily related to the reflection of spiritual life in written monuments on the history of the Russian Orthodox Church of the 16th–20th centuries and Old Believers. But not only the problems of the history and culture of Russian Orthodoxy in their various variants and manifestations have become the subject of study in published articles. The results of the research of scientific materials of academic and government expeditions to Siberia in the 18th century, periodicals of the 20th century and the features of the reflection in it of various historical events and phenomena, the problems of mastering and scientific publication of the memoir heritage of the Decembrist movement are also presented. A significant place in the issue is devoted to the works of young scientists and graduate students. The articles offered to the reader are combined in this issue of the journal into the following thematic sections: “Sources on the history of the Russian Orthodox Church”, “Sources on the history of Old Believers”, “Materials of academic and government expeditions of the 18th century”, “Periodicals as a historical source”, “Memoir sources”.

Cultures in Dialogue: A Portal for Maximus the Greek

Studies on Maximus the Greek have a long and established tradition. Research on him, however, has yet to profit from transition into the digital realm. This led to the idea of a dedicated portal, the project of which is presented here. It will be a trilingual, Italian-Russian-English, portal that will make the published works of Maximus the Greek and their translations into modern European languages freely accessible. Thanks to specific digital mapping, it will constitute an advanced tool for the study of his writings and activities, especially in the realm of the role played by humanistic culture and the values of Humanism. Due to its characteristics, the portal will represent a space open to both international and interdisciplinary dialogue. After outlining a brief status studiorum, the author describes the phases in the realisation of the portal, its structure and composition, the methodology adopted, the innovative aspects of the project and its potential for development.

Sources for Studying the Ritual Practices of the Orthodox Population of Western Siberia in the 17th Century: Pilgrimages to Holy Places

The study of the phenomenon of pilgrimages to holy places is important for characterizing the religiosity of the Siberian first settlers. The objective limitation of the source base of the study actualizes the search for information in the documents of the prikaz records, preserved in the archives (RGADA, Archive of the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the RAS). The article defines the range of possible sources and considers their information resources. The complex of secular documents necessary for the pilgrimage was reconstructed. The records in the customs books, which recorded the movement of pilgrims through customs, were analyzed. The search for information in the census books and judicial investigation cases was carried out. In general, 56 certificates of pilgrimages were found. They contain information about the social status and place of residence of pilgrims, the time of the pilgrimage, modes of movement and routes. A list of holy places in the European part of Russia, to which Siberians went, has been determined. Firstly, these were places associated with the exploits of the miracle-working saints, where their relics were located. Secondly, these are the places where miraculous and revealed icons were located. These were both widely known and revered only by local communities in the Russian North and in the Kama region. The main Siberian shrine was the Abalak Icon of the Mother of God, and visiting local monasteries was an integral part of the ritual practices of the Siberians.

On the Problem of Coexistence of Manuscripts and Printed Books among the Provincial Clergy at the Turn of the 17th–18th Centuries

The article is devoted to some aspects of existence of Cyrillic books among the provincial clergy. Descriptions of Patriarch's estates in 13 uyezds of European Russia (1701–1703) include inventories of 55 church book collections. An analysis of a random sample of 1002 handwritten and printed codices showed that at the beginning of the 18th century, “coexistence” of manuscripts and printed books continued, despite the widespread prevalence of the latter. The article studies the repertoire of manuscripts in rural churches and publishes the book inventories from the churches of the villages of Matyushevo, Rabotki and Yarymovo in the Nizhny Novgorod and Murom uezds.

The article introduces into scientific circulation an unknown text, written by the outstanding Russian liturgist Alexey Dmitrievsky, – his comments on the program on Liturgics for 1869. A. Dmitrievsky was among the seven subject teachers, who gave their feedback on the program and made a number of critical comments. The changes and additions proposed by the scientist were accepted for the most part and affected the content of the new program on Liturgics, created in 1885 and determined the scope, sequence of topics and direction of teaching the discipline in all theological seminaries of the Russian Empire from the 1886/1887 academic year until 1906.

Archive of Secret Monastic Communities of the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery: Formation History and Composition

The article provides an overview of the archive of secret monastic communities that arose in the 1920s in the Moscow Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery. The archive is a large documentary collection created by the believers themselves and covering the life of the largest secret monastic community of the Soviet period known to us today. The archive has a complex structure since its parts characterize the activities of various spiritual mentors. The archive consisted of several personal documentary collections of members of the Petrovsky community, which, however, are closely interrelated. The core of this collection consists of the sayings of spiritual mentors (startsy) preserved in various forms (letters, collections of sayings, paterik). The content of the documents of the Vysoko-Petrovsky archive is primarily ascetic. This is consistent with the task set by the fathers of the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery, who sought to preserve the monastic tradition even in conditions of persecution.

The Place of the Printed Kormchaia in the Formation of the Ideology of the Old Believers

The article shows how the publication of the Printed Kormchaia influenced the formation of the ideology and discourse of the opponents of the Church reform of the 17th century. It examines the significance of the Tale about the Establishment of the Patriarchate for the opponents of the reform. It is shown how the Kormchaia made it possible to substantiate the immutability of the Tale, as well as the definition of the concept of “heretic”. It is traced how the “legalistic” approach was formed and how it made it possible to prove the illegality of the cruel persecution of the Old Believers and led to the demand for changes in Russian legislation.

“Praise to His Holiness Patriarch Nikon” and “On the Antichrist” – Dialogue of Texts by Ideological Opponents

Two little-known journalistic monuments of the 17th century are published. “Memoirs to Patriarch Nikon” and “On the Antichrist”, which are a kind of dialogue between the texts of ideological opponents. On the one hand, “Praise to Patriarch Nikon” by an unknown author, an adherent of the official church, striving to elevate the patriarch by comparing him with God, on the other – the Old Believer's work “On the Antichrist”, which is a response to “Praise”. The anonymous Old Believer writer aims to completely debunk the image of the ideal church hierarch. Both of these texts are of significant interest to the history of the Old Believers: the Old Believer essay on the anti-Christ gives an idea of forming the idea of the anti-Christ essence of Patriarch Nikon among the first generation of opponents of church reform. The publication was carried out according to the text published by Ya.L. Barskov, subtracted and corrected according to the only manuscript that preserved these texts (RGADA, f. 27 Order of secret affairs, d. 578–579). The texts are accompanied by historical and literary commentary.

Early Version of the Life of Monk Epiphanii and the Petition of Monk Avraamii

The article is devoted to the discovery of a previously unknown fragment of the petition of the monk Avraamii (1670) in the manuscript of RSL Department of manuscripts, f. 17, Barsov coll., No. 654 (late 18 century). Analyzing this text and comparing it with the preface from the early edition of the Life of the monk Epiphanii, which is in the same manuscript, the author concludes that neither of the passages are authorial, but were compiled by a later editor. Such an observation is quite typical for the Petition of Avraamii, whose handwritten history is extremely diverse, but is of greater interest for the history of the work of Epiphanii, the early edition of which is known in a single list and is considered the author's.

The article considers the variants of the existence of hagiographic texts in the late Old Believer written tradition by the example of the life of Princess Olga. The aim of the work was to identify the texts of Olga’s life as part of the Old Believers manuscripts of the 19–20 centuries, stored in Siberian collections. As a result, three texts of the life of Princess Olga were discovered: two – as part of the Tomsk State University Research Library, one – as part of Elfimov collection of Tumen State University. It is shown that the first two copies are the text of the life of Olga from the Prologue (lengthy redaction) with some discrepancies. The copy from Tyumen State University is an extract from life of Olga, located in the Book of Degrees. The analysis of discrepancies showed that in its text there are readings both from the Tomsk copy of the Book of Degrees (short redaction) and from Piskarevsky (lengthy redaction).

Letters of the Old Believers to Bishop Irinei of Yekaterinburg and Irbit as a Source on the History of the Mission among the Old Believers

The article notes that the history of the mission of the Orthodox Russian Church among the Old Believers has not been studied enough and is a promising area of research. An essay published on a hectograph in Yekaterinburg is analyzed: “Several letters sent in August and September 1901 by the Old Believers to His Grace Irenei, Bishop of Yekaterinburg and Irbit”. Conflict situations related to the activities of anti-schismatic missions in the Perm and Yekaterinburg dioceses are considered. Analysis of these situations shows that within the Russian Orthodox Church there were different approaches to missionary activity: on the one hand, preference was given to administrative and police methods, on the other, emphasis was placed on dialogue. It is noted that missionaries have made a great contribution to the study of the history and ideology of the Old Believers. The article reconstructs the biographies of the anti-schismatic missionaries.

The accord was named after its main leader, a native of Perm peasants and a former chapel Titus Tarasovich Vygvintsev. From the entire array of sources obtained in recent years by Siberian archeographers, two directly related documents are published: “Testament of the Brotherhood with Titus Tarasovich” and “Conciliar resolution of the Old Believers of Titus Consent” 2005. The “Testament” dated April 4, 1903, is by far the earliest source on the history of consent.

The authors hows role of Russian travelers in the revision and evidence of the failure of the dual opposition in the study of Siberian ethnic groups, who were at different civilizational levels during the visit by expeditions and are capable of changing them as a result of intercultural exchange and education, is shown.  This paper presents the study aimed to characterize the image of the Orthodox Church based on the materials from “Pravda” in 1920. Consideration is given to the semantic content of the image of the Church, the methods of its construction, and the forms of its representation. The study reveals that although the Party proclaimed a tolerant attitude toward the Church, “Pravda” was used to form a rather negative attitude toward the Church, and an image of a priest, endowed with negative qualities and comprehensible to a wide circle of readers, was commonly used for that purpose.

Anti-Religious Propaganda on the Pages in the Magazine “Krasnaya Sibiryachka” (1920–1930s)

The article is devoted to the antireligious propaganda of the Soviet power in magazine “Krasnaya Sibiryachka” in 1920–1930s. The author analyzes reasons for the magazine's creation and emphasizes the importance of involving women in the process of socialistic society building which was connected with refusal from religious outlook. The author of the article provides a brief survey of existing studies devoted to the journal and various aspects of the articles it publishes. The article identifies the main genres of antireligious propaganda. A conclusion is drawn about the predominantly anti-clerical and crude nature of the anti-religious propaganda, the gradual change in the rhetoric of the magazine from more tolerant and diverse in content to more intransigent and directed towards social hatred, and the dependence of editorial policy on the current political interests of the authorities.

Publication of the Memoir Heritage of Participants of the Decembrists Movement: Periodization, Some Results and Perspectives

In contrast to the existing reviews of archaeographic works in the field of Decembrist studies (R.G. Eymontova and others), the published article for the first time specifically considers the process of publishing Decembrist memoirs, its features and results in the pre-revolutionary, Soviet and modern periods. The author takes into account the memories left not only by those subjected to trial, but also by other categories of Decembrists (punished without trial, escaped punishment, not involved in the investigation). For the first time, an attempt is made to periodize the primary archaeographic assimilation of memoir texts and the subsequent preparation of scientific publications. The main results of the publishing tradition are shown, the great contribution made by the Decembrist scholars to the corpus of published memoirs, the reasons why a significant part of the Decembrist memoirs still do not have a scientific publication are considered, and promising directions for further publishing work are identified.
