The paper analyzes the process of organizing the academic and university structures (Permanent Commission for Social Sciences at the Presidium of Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences; Sector and Department of the Institute of Economics, then – Institute of History, Philology and Philosophy, SB RAS; Chair of History of the USSR of the Humanities Department at the Novosibirsk State University (NSU); Chair of History of the USSR at the Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University (NSPI)) providing basis for formation of the community of historians who study relevant issues of Siberian history of the late 16th – early 20th centuries. Describing this process the author analyzes not only research findings obtained by the scholars, but also their personal characteristics, collisions in their lives, impact of everyday life and dominant paradigms. The research base includes about 100 specialists, firs of all – five researchers (M.M. Gromyko, O.N. Vilkov, L.M. Goryushkin, A.N. Kopylov, N.N. Pokrovskiy) who formed the backbone of the department of pre-revolutionary history at the Institute of History, Philology and Philosophy, Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Two of them became members of the Academy of Sciences, some of them played a prominent role in the social and political life (being on the opposite sides) of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok, but all of them contributed significantly to the development of a new academic institution which appeared in Novosibirsk owing to the creation of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences. The article combines elements of a scientific writing and memoirs. The article’s sources include memoirs, which are very few in number, bibliographical guides and personal impressions of the author. Little known facts are taken from the autobiographies, personal data sheets and employee’s files still held at the Institute of History.
