Experience in Research of Reproduction and Migration of an Ethnic Group in 1959–1989s: by the Example of the Buryat Population of the Pre-Baikal Region

In the present time ethnic aspects of demographic development of population attracts a lot of attention. Due to this it is possible to explain dynamics of population number in multinational regions. Nowadays for various historical reasons rather often a territory of some people’s settlements is divided by administrative and regional borders. It might not make an impact on the reproduction and migration of population because the regions have significant differences in their dynamics of social economic, cultural and political development. Historically, the districts of major settlements of the Buryats in Russia are the Irkutsk, Chita regions and the Republic of Buryatia. In the present paper the authors analyze specifics of processes of the Buryats settlement in Irkutsk region. Questions of natural movement and migrations of the Buryats in Predbaykalye in the 1960–1980s practically have not been analyzed. Researchers primarily paid attention to studies of the Republic of Buryatia. Chronologically the work spans a 30-years period beginning from 1959 and up to 1989. The work is supported by a theory of demographic transition explaining how the traditional type of reproduction is replaced by the modern type. The data of demographic statistics was a resource basis of the paper. Information about number, territorial settlement, age and social composition of ethnos was collected from Censuses. Information about current population statistics was necessary for calculations of natural and mechanical growth, assimilation, expected life duration and the total fertility rate. It was established that dynamics of the Buryat population of the Irkutsk region had significant specifics. The authors show that the speed of demographic transition which was the highest in the early 1960s later slowed down due to a moderate growth of urban population share. Peculiarities of natural growth and migration influenced the size of the Buryat population in 1959–1989s as the rate of its growth was the lowest among the areas of priority settlement.
