A letter of the staff members of the Aarcheographic Commission of the USSR Academy of Sciences V. Pavlov-Silvansky and N. Samorukova from the first academic archeographic expedition to the Far East is published. Written in September 1958 and addressed to the scientific secretary of the Archeographic Commission Yu.O. Behm, the letter has been preserved in the fonds of the Commission Chairperson academician M.N. Tikhomirov in the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences. These fonds also include letters to M.N. Tikhomirov from the archeographic expedition to Buryatia, which the authors plan to publish in the journal “Vestnik Novosibirskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta”. The published letter covers the time, the composition of the expedition participants, their relationship with local colleagues, finances, difficulties in developing routes, etc. It conveys the optimistic mood of the participants and contains the first information about the acquisitions. Information about the findings of Moscow scientists in Primorye and Khabarovsk territory was supplemented and refined by expeditions of the Siberian branch of the Archeographic Commission in the early 1980s. It is revealed that in 1990, sources collected during the first expedition were included in the fonds of pre-revolutionary editions of the library of the Christ-born cathedral in Khabarovsk. Then the old part of the church library was transferred to the Khabarovsk theological seminary, which opened in 2005. The published letter makes it possible to reconstruct the history of the initial stage of scientific study of the Old believers population of the Far East and its book collections. In terms of its classification this document can be defined as a semi-business letter. The publication is carried out according to “The Rules for publishing historical documents”, but in accordance with the stricter principles of text transmission, substantiated by academician N. Pokrovsky. Abridged and not fully spelled words and parts of words are revealed in square brackets, spelling and punctuation are corrected without any footnotes. Geographical names and text in quotations from inscriptions on books and/or their titles are transmitted in accordance with the original spelling.
