The interpersonal relations between the two prominent representatives of the Church and Russian written culture of the second half of the 17th century – Afanasiy Kholmogorskiy and Ignatius Rimskiy-Korsakov, who belonged to the community of Church writers from the Patriarch’s associates, were recorded in different sources, including their own writings. Their relationships are of great scientific interest due to the fact that the topic of studying personal relations of historical figures concerns such prevailing issues as “historical biography” and “personal history”. This article examines the features of the personality of Afanasiy Kholmogorsky’s reflection in the works of Ignatius Rimskiy-Korsakov; analyzes the nature of the formation of his image as an intellectual leader of the community. As the research material, the paper uses two works by Ignatius Rimskiy-Korsakov that contain information about the biography of Archbishop Afanasiy and his personal qualities: Epistle about the Death of Patriarch Joachim, addressed to Afanasiy, and Siberian Epistles. In his text, Ignatius Rimskiy-Korsakov points out a number of historical facts and situations related to Afanasiy Kholmogorsky: refutation of Nikita Dobrynin during a debate on faith in July 1682, in the Palace of Facets of the Moscow Kremlin; participation in a controversy about the time of the Eucharist transubstantiation; writing the book The Shield of Faith, etc. The analysis of these texts revealed a number of author’s assessments of the personal qualities of the Kholmogory Archbishop, which characterize him as an ideological leader of the writers from the Patriarch’s circle. Afanasiy Kholmogorsky appears in the description of Ignatius Rimsky-Korsakov as a prominent hierarch of the Church, the ideological heir of Patriarch Joachim, an authoritative ideologist of the “Grecophiles” who opposed the “Latinophiles”, a tireless fighter against the opponents of the Church reform, and an intelligent writer and publicist. Despite the fact that Afanasiy lived far from Moscow events, he had a great ideological influence on the community. His associates were seeking his advice and support, in particular, Ignatius Rimskiy-Korsakov, who captured the image of a like-minded friend in his own writings.
