The professional community of Siberian journalists was formed in the second half of the XIX century. Representatives of various classes became employees of periodicals in Siberia. The purpose of this article is to analyze why people from the clergy began to cooperate with secular periodicals in Siberia, became their employees, editors, and publishers. The author turned to the biographical aspects of famous and influential figures in the world of journalism: M.V. Zagoskin – editor of the Newspapers “Amur” and “Siberia”, S.S. Shashkov – employee of metropolitan and Siberian periodicals, P.V. Makushin – editor and publisher of the Tomsk editions such as “Siberian newspaper”, “Tomsk reference leaflet”, “Tomsk leaflet” (later transformed into “Siberian life”). The article is written on such sources as the ego-documents of journalists, notes, articles, obituaries about the figures mentioned in this article published in the most famous Siberian printed media outlets – such as Irkutsk “Siberia” (1873–1887), “Eastern review” (1882–1906), Tomsk “Siberian newspaper” (1881–1888) and “Siberian life” (1897–1919). The author indicates factors that influenced the journalists’ choice of their career: impact of the era of liberal reforms of the 19th century, education in religious institutions, thirst for reading, books, education, the desire to actively influence the characteristics and living conditions of the Siberian population.
