Woman in the Russian Province of the 17th Century (on the Materials of the Southern Russia)
DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2019-3-10
The article presents the problems of the legal status of Russian women under the conditions of the South Russian province during the 17th century by the example of materials of prikaz (administrative offices), customs houses and pubs of the Voronezh, Elets, Belgorod and other counties. The realities of southern Russia, noted in the research literature of recent years, differed from the conditions prevailing in the center of the country. In that region for a long time, local authorities, so-called voevody, played the most important role, it is obvious that during that period of time these authorities had absolute power. In the South Russian cities “on the field” (i. e. on the frontier) had their own special features. There were less women, more military men, less people were peasants. Very little is known about any facts connected with ordinary women in Russia in the Modern Age, and the lack of sources is a real problem. That is why any references to women in archival documents are of great interest and valuable for gender studies. In this regard, the author presents archival materials, mostly connected with customs and tavern management in the South of Russia. The article analyzes different materials with cases of customs and tavern routine, describes cases of mentioning names of provincial women (in written and archival documents).
