The article analyses everyday life of the townswomen in the Eastern Siberia on the basis of analysis of materials from the regional press covering the period under study. The author addresses a problem which needs to be explored further in modern historiography. Periodical press still remains a poorly studied historical source. The Siberian journalists very seldom dedicated their articles to the feminine issues in proper, the feminine problem mainly used to be presented in the context of general problems. The feminine problem was usually considered within the framework of various genres of periodicals, while most informative in this respect are travel notes and historical ethnographical sketches and essays. The materials of periodicals reflected the changes which began in the era of modernization, including the woman’s role in the Siberian society. The regional press striving to be in the center of social life raised such questions as women’s education, their professional activities, the family-conjugal tries and private freedom of women, etc. The authors of many publications showed interest to various aspects of feminine world. The gradual process of drifting away from the patriarchal traditions of society influenced the townswoman’s everyday life. Educational and professional aspirations of women became the central issue raised on the pages of Siberian newspapers in the second half of the 19th century. The regional press, trying to attract the attention, attached great importance to the social problems of the female citizens. On the whole the Siberian periodicals is a very valuable and interesting source for the study of everyday life of Siberian women in the era of modernization.
