The Novonikolaevsk Entrepreneur Ivan Filippovich Stoilov: Family History and the Fate of His Descendants (19th − 20th Centuries)
DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2026-1-9
This article, based on a wide variety of sources, both archival and oral ones passed down from generation to generation, examines the history of the famous Novonikolaevsk family of entrepreneurs Stoilovs. Thanks to the memory of their descendants, it is possible to uncover how the life of several generations of this family developed, from the middle of the 19th century to the present day. Undoubtedly, the most striking figure among them is Ivan Filippovich Stoilov, coming from peasant background. From an early age, he spent his life with Siberian river transport: he was a cabin boy, drove cargo barges, and then steered large steamships. At the same time, he actively participated in the public life of Novonikolaevsk and did a lot for the development of the city and the entire region. Special attention is paid to the fate of I.F. Stoilov’s descendants: their lives turned out differently, as some were forced to leave the country during the Civil War, yet most of them stayed in their homeland and tried, despite the “former” status, to find a worthy place in Soviet Russia. The family archives reveal that almost all of I.F. Stoilov’s children and grandchildren received a good education and served the country honestly, experiencing all the hardships along with it, and left a noticeable mark not only in the history of Novonikolaevsk-Novosibirsk, but in the history of the entire state.
