 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2025-5-9

The article describes the living conditions of the evacuated population in the Siberian rear during the Great Patriotic War. The Khakass Autonomous Region became one of the regions hosting evacuees from the western part of the country. The main problems that arose in the region with a large influx of people are considered. The mass migration of the population to Khakassia contributed to the creation of an unfavorable epidemiological situation. As a result of sanitary and medical measures, it was possible to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the region in a timely manner. The evacuated population faced a lot of problems being away from home. In extreme conditions, adaptation to unsettled conditions and everyday difficulties took place. The article shows how local authorities solved the issues of accommodation, employment, fuel supply and food for evacuated families. The primary and difficult task in the case of a shortage of housing in the region was the resettlement of the arriving population. To accommodate the evacuees, authorities searched for all kinds of rooms, assigned living quarters to them in local residents’ apartments, or built simple houses. In cases of indifference and bureaucratic attitude of government representatives, the evacuated population had to take the initiative when looking for housing or work. Despite the difficulties of wartime, as far as possible, the evacuees were provided with material and household assistance, both from the authorities and local residents. Through the combined efforts of local authorities, heads of enterprises and institutions, and the public, they managed to create the necessary conditions for the survival of the evacuated population.
