The year 2025 − the Year of Defenders of the Fatherland, the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory − was marked by a truly innumerable multitude of projects of a very different nature and content. Scientific events have become part of this large-scale movement. One of them was held in St. Petersburg on May 13−16, 2025 the All‑Russian Scientific Conference “Science during the Great Patriotic War: a gallery of scientists”. The Military Gallery of the Winter Palace (the State Hermitage Museum), which was designed by Alexander I, including 332 portraits of generals of the Russian army, is known all over the world. The St. Petersburg conference formed a (so far only virtual) gallery of scientists − who directed their scientific potential to the introduction of cutting-edge developments that were so necessary for a warring country, who helped raise the spirit, who found themselves on the front line or worked for defense in the rear, saved scientific and cultural values. The conference was attended by more than 200 participants of different ages representing 23 academic, 16 museum and library, 20 university centers from 14 cities of the Russian Federation, as well as from Belarus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Mongolia. A wide range of participants made it possible to consider the declared topic in its widest scope: the speakers focused on employees of academic institutes, museums, libraries and archives, as well as representatives of university science − physicists, naturalists, engineers, technicians, doctors, humanities scientists, teachers, etc. The anniversary St. Petersburg event allowed to immerse themselves in scientific, cultural and spiritual history of the wartime in all its breadth of thematic and geographical scales, and (most importantly) to pay tribute to the memory of scientists − representatives of the indomitable generation of winners. The conference materials being prepared for publication will provide an opportunity for a wide range of researchers to get acquainted with the results of scientific research presented at the meetings.
