The Yeniseysk Merchant Ignatiy Kytmanov: a Choice between Personal and Public

The article examines new details of the activities of the representative of a famous Yeniseysk merchant family – Ignatiy Petrovich Kytmanov (1818–1895), and his contribution to the history of Yeniseysk and the Yeniseysk province. Previously unused documents from the fonds of the State Archive of the Krasnoyarsk Territory are introduced into scientific circulation, introducing the components of successful business management by I.P. Kytmanov, who relied on a combination of several types of entrepreneurship, as well as revealing the ratio of personal benefit and public benefit, which he was guided by in his practice. The importance of merchant charity in the economic and cultural development of the northern territories of Siberia is emphasized. The attention is focused mainly on a specific case from the biography of I.P. Kytmanov, which allows us to get an idea of his participation in philanthropic activities and the social needs to which he directed his donations. At the same time, the identified sources to some extent indicate an important problem such as the interaction of the regional administration and representatives of private enterprise. In general, the presented material makes it possible to clarify the biography of I.P. Kytmanov and to illustrate the participation of merchants in the development of the economy and socio-cultural sphere of the northern territories of Russia by a specific example.
