History of the Zlatoust (Kosotur) Cast Iron Smelting and Iron Making Factory of Ufa Province at the Beginning of the 20th Century: Economic Situation

This article presents the history and economic indicators of Zlatoust (Kosotur) cast iron smelting and iron-making factory in Ufa province at the beginning of the 20th century. The article describes statistical data about Zlatoust plant for 1900–1910. The study attempts to reveal the history and to show the economic situation of the Zlatoust plant at the beginning of the 20th century. This research provides general information about the plant, the organization and activities of the mining plant, blast furnace, and puddling processes production of cast iron and iron. Tables show volumes of cast iron smelting, puddling iron, cast metal, metal products between 1900–1908 and in 1910, artillery shells between 1900–1917, information on profitability between 1900–1904, and 1909–1911 at the Zlatoust plant. In the early 20th century the Zlatoust plant produced open-hearth and crucible steel, puddling steel, iron, nails, edged weapons (daggers, blades, rapiers, spadroons), railway crutches, and bolts, steel shells, tableware (forks, knives). According to official orders, Zlatoust plant produced 3- and 6-inch shells and armor-piercing shells for coastal, naval and field artillery. In 1902 the plant started a blast furnace (Ermolovskaya), and in 1903 a new shell building plant was built. The study revealed the main reasons for the unprofitability of the plant. The measures undertaken after the fire in mechanical and shell factories were described as well.
