Russians in China: Backstory of Success (On Materials of Fonds of Central State Historical Archive of St. Petersburg)

The publication consists of four biographical notes covering the pages of the lives of musicians Z.A. Pribytkova and B.S. Zakharov, architect A.A. Bernardazzi and diplomat N.G. Poppe. In the pre-revolutionary period, they had St. Petersburg (Petrograd) in common, and later China. The materials of the Central State Historical Archive of St. Petersburg made it possible to document various facts of their biographies, both widely and little known. They were revealed in the archive fonds of Petrograd Imperial University, Petrograd Conservatory, Russian Imperial Musical Society¸ Institute of Civil Engineers of Emperor Nicholas I, as well as Petrograd executive board, city credit society, spiritual consistory, gymnasium of the Successor Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaevich, related to the studies and professional activities of the declared characters. The author dwells in detail on the documents that are part of the available personal files, as well as other materials on the topic, carefully describes them, focusing on the completeness and safety of the source. The information presented in the article can serve both to clarify information about specific people in connection with the involvement of a fairly wide range of documents, and to deepen the understanding of the sources themselves, stored in the archive and containing a large amount of information on the history of St. Petersburg and the biographies of its inhabitants in the pre-revolutionary period.
