Old Believer Libraries Kept in the Collection of the Tomsk Theological Seminary Until 1917: Intermediate Results of the Work
DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2022-2-19
The article presents some interim results of the work on the identification of the owners of Old Believers libraries received by the “schismatic” library of the Tomsk Theological seminary in the second half of the 19th century as a result of confiscation of books from the Old Believers in the Tomsk province. In the 1920, the library of the seminary entered the funds of Scientific Library of the Tomsk State Universiti, where it is kept at the present time. Two methods of identifying Old Believers book collections are described: identification of the owners based on the materials of records on the books: owners and scribers, as well as records made during the confiscation of the books and their attribution in the consistory. The second option is to use materials from investigation cases stored in the State Archive of the Tomsk Region). It is shown that using of the first method, 8 Old Believers book collections have been identified. The second method has so far identified books from 6 Old Believers libraries, but the study continues. The strengths and weakness of these methods are shown, examples are given when data about books can be extracted from all the listed sources. The available archival information was also compared with one of the most authoritative publications on the history of the Tomsk Old Believers – the work of D.N. Belikov; it was found that information from the Scientific Library of the Tomsk State Universiti (available books), State Archive of the Tomsk Region and the works of D.N. Belikov, overlap only partially. However, in combination, work with them makes it possible to reconstruct a number of Old Believers libraries now stored in the Scientific Library of the Tomsk State Universiti, as well as to obtain some information about their owners. Currently, work on the identification of books from Old Believers libraries in the Scientific Library of the Tomsk State Universiti continues. As a result, this work, of course, provides new knowledge about the history of the Old Believers in the Tomsk province in the second half of the 19th century.
