The Spread of Malaria in Western Siberia During the Great Patriotic War

The article examines the dynamics of the incidence of malaria in Western Siberia during the war years. The author considers of the predecessors who studied this problem along with characteristic features of the spread of this disease and the specifics of its course. The information about the means of treating malaria used in the USSR during the war period is presented. The main forms and methods of combating it during the period under study are shown. Their classification into measures aimed at reducing the number of malarial mosquitoes, aimed at reducing the possibility of biting and measures to reduce the number of infected population is proposed. The situation that developed in Western Siberia with the incidence of malaria in the pre-war years is described. Summary data on the spread of malaria in the regions of Western Siberia are presented. The factors that determined the dynamics of morbidity are disclosed. Such factors included the perception by health authorities of malaria as a non-priority infection, and a negative impact on the morbidity of the evacuated population. It is concluded that during the Great Patriotic War, the trend to reduce the spread of malaria, which was formed in the pre-war period, was broken, and there was a temporary return to the tendency to the growth of this infection. The elimination of malaria became an important task for post-war health care.
