The Formation of Evacuation Hospitals Network in the Kuzbass During the Great Patriotic War

The effective military hospital system was formed in the territory of the Kemerovo region during the Great Patriotic war of 1941–1945. According to archival data there were 72 evacuation hospitals in the Kuzbass cities and towns. Analysis of documents showed that three groups of military hospitals were stationed in Kuzbass. The first group included 22 military hospitals deployed by the Siberian military district. The second group consisted of 45 evacuation hospitals of the Kharkiv military district that arrived at Siberia after the retreat of Soviet troops at the initial period of the war. The third group included 5 military hospitals opened on the basis of sanatoriums and vacation retreats by the Kuzbass plants and mines trade unions. There were a number of problems associated with the placement of several dozen evacuation hospitals in the territory of the modern Kemerovo region. These included finding suitable premises, equipping them with everything necessary, staffing hospitals with qualified medical personnel, and providing hospital staff with clothing, food, and cash allowances. There were several ways in which party committees and local authorities solved these problems. City hospital buildings were allocated for military hospitals. Part of the cost of creating and maintaining evacuation hospitals was transferred to industrial enterprises and mines. Doctors and secondary medical personnel from city hospitals were mobilized to work in military ones. Special courses were organized for professorial training and retraining of hospital personnel. Analysis of documents shows that the vast majority of evacuation hospitals were deployed in the first months of the Great Patriotic War.
