The authors based on various official statistical sources, primarily information from the Mining Department and Mining scientific Committee, present data on gold mining in the Urals and in Russia from 1754 to 1920 years. On the basis of these data the article attempt sto identify stages in the development of the gold mining industry in the Urals at the specified time. The authors concluded that gold mining in Russia can be divided into two periods: “Ural” (1754–1828) and “all-Russian” (1829–1920). The second period in the Urals is divided into two stages (cycles) – “feudal-serfdom” and “bourgeois”. In addition, eight “stages” of production growth were identified, four in each period. This approach to the periodization procedure is justified. The authors consider Various factors that influenced the dynamics of gold mining, downturns and ups in the development of this branch of mining industry – of economic, socio-political and administrative nature. An attempt is made to justify the impact of crop failures, political events, and global market conditions on the industry. The dependence of gold mining in the Urals in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century on the world economic crises is revealed. The influence of government regulations, wars and revolution on this industry is shown. At the same time, it is noted that the all-Russian gold mining was somewhat different from the trends identified during the study of gold mining in the Urals. The authors’ conclusions and assumptions are supported by statistical data provided in tables and graphs.
