This article consider major stages of life of a prominent agrarian historian, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Science L. M. Goryushkin (1927–1999); analyzes his contribution to the study of Siberian history during the late 19th – early 20th century. He was born in the family of peasant settler, finished rural high school, and graduated from the department of history at the Tomsk University. While attending the special seminar of Professor I. M. Razgon he started studying agrarian history of the region during the late 19th – early 20th century. Since 1961 he had been working in Novosibirsk as head of the department at the Academic institute and at the Humanities Faculty of the Novosibirsk State University. In 1963–1995 his special seminar was attended by 94 graduates (or by every tenth student who graduated from the University before 1995). Analyzing the situation in the agrarian sector L.M. Goryushkin stated that the elements of American (farmer’s) way of capitalism development were prevalent. Researching social structure of Siberian peasantry, he touched upon the subject of multiformity, admitting presence of patriarchal, small-commodity, capitalistic and feudal ways of life in the region, a relevant problem in the 1970s. According to his conclusion, the most important items of trade in Siberian village were butter and agricultural implements forming the basis for commodity circulation. Besides agrarian development of the region, he researched the settlement of the region, political convicts, peasant movement, foreign capital, charity and the history of pre-revolutionary Novonikolaevsk-Novosibirsk.
