Siberian Regionalism (1860s – Early XX century) in the English- and German-language Historiography

 DOI:10.31518/2618-9100-2018-1-17

The article considers major works of foreign (American, Canadian and German) researchers of Siberian regionalism and evaluates their contribution to the study of this topic. It is established that foreign scholars (G. Hanson, D. von Mohrenshildt, N. Pereira etc.) have largely drawn their conclusions based on research findings from the works of Russian historians. In the last decades foreign scholars actively worked in the Russian archives. Having analyzed a wide range of issues associated with the history of Siberian regionalism the foreign researchers recognize an outstanding role played by the Siberian regionalists in the cultural and socio-political life of the region. While admitting that not all goals set by the regionalists were achieved, Western scholars still believe that "Siberian patriots" should be credited with transformations that enabled Siberia to embark on a path of modern development at the turn of the XIX - XX centuries.
