“The Film Must Be Strictly Historical…”: A Discussion of the Filming of “Kolchakovshchina” in a Siberian Periodical in 1929

 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2022-5-12

In modern Russian academic science, cultural anthropology is becoming more and more popular, allowing, along with other areas of historical knowledge, to obtain a full-fledged idea of a particular era. The article presents an analytical review of the discussion that has developed in the Siberian periodical press around the filming of the film “Kolchakovshchina” by the Kinosibir film studio, which was supposed to take place in 1929. The film was to become part of the official celebrations dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the restoration of Soviet power in Siberia. The methodological basis of the study was the principle of consistency, anthropological and cultural approaches, and the comparative historical method. This methodological set made it possible, after analyzing the development of the discussion, to establish the main directions of the discussion, mainly related to the need to display in the “Kolchakovshchina” the real historical events of the Civil War in the East of Russia. At the same time, the idea of creating a motion picture is considered as part of the large-scale propaganda activities of the Soviet government, which was in dire need of a historical justification for its existence. In conclusion, it is emphasized that, despite the relevance and urgency of the plot that was supposed to be embodied on the screen, the filming of the film was never started due to insufficient funding, the congestion of the Kinosibir film studio and its closure that followed soon after. The article is addressed to a wide range of specialists studying cultural anthropology, early Soviet society, Soviet cinematography, ideological and propaganda work in the USSR, the Civil War in the East of Russia and Siberian local history.
