The participation of Soviet partisans in the Italian Resistance is an interesting page in the history of World War II. The activities of the Soviet contingent in the areas of greatest importance to the military conflict on Italian territory are well described – in Lazio, Tuscany, Reggio Emilia – close to the Wehrmacht defensive lines. The northeastern part of Italy, less studied, had its own particular characteristics, as many of its territories were incorporated directly into the Third Reich, with a programme of Germanisation. At the same time, Verona became the unofficial capital of the Mussolini puppet “Social Republic”. The heightened military presence of Nazi-fascism somewhat restrained the unfolding guerrilla movement. The resistance in the Venice’s region (Veneto) had its other peculiarities: in addition the communist Garibaldi's units, there were active Catholic partisans who nevertheless welcomed Soviet fighters into their ranks. The Soviet partisans here also made a significant contribution to the liberation of the country.
