Demographic modernization is a worldwide, global process. By today it has been completed in most countries of Western Europe and North America, as well as in some of the most developed countries of Asia and Latin America. In some countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America the process continues. In Russia (except separate regions) the process is close to completion. Thus, fundamental changes, covering such demographic processes as fertility, mortality, life expectancy are an integral part of world history. In western countries the process of demographic modernization began on the threshold of a Modem Age, approximately in the 18th century while in Russia it started much later – at the very end of the 19th – early 20th centuries. While in the West, the demographic modernization was relatively smooth, socially calm, in Russia it proceeded very rapidly and was accompanied by huge population losses. Since Russia is a geographically vast country, the features of its demographic modernization included a strongly marked regional component. In this regard, the study of the process of demographic modernization in our country is impossible without taking into account its specificity in various areas. The features of the demographic modernization of one of Russia’s largest regions – Western Siberia – are studied. Socio-historical conditions and factors of demographic modernization are characterized. Much attention is paid to the analysis of regional and sub regional features of the process, its intermediate and final results, difficulties and contradictions. Demographic modernization, the core of which was the demographic transition, is presented as an organic part of modernization of traditional society.
