Studies in the history of Siberian journalism in most cases are devoted to the study of the periodicals themselves. The object of attention of specialists is the periodical press itself in a variety of legal, economic, organizational aspects. Thus some unexplored issues remain in the historiography of this subject area, in particular, researchers almost ignored the issues of the professional community of journalists, their professional practices. The purpose of this article is to characterize the information capabilities of ego-documents as a source of study of formation and functioning of professional community of Siberian journalists of the second half XIX – early XX century. The set of sources for the solution of this task includes epistolary and memoir heritage of Siberian journalists. The author turned to the letters of prominent figures in print media: N.M. Yadrintsev, A.V. Adrianov, G.D. Grebenshchikov, G.N. Potanin, I.G. Goldberg. They contain information about the professional practices of employees, specifics of the provincial press, its differences from the press in capital press, subjective assessments of the process of origin and development of the periodic press in Siberia. These letters also contain information about building relationships with the authorities, censorship, in-editorial atmosphere, the financial situation of journalists. For clarification of conditions of “newspaper life” of figures of the press the author used the memoirs heritage of I.I. Popov, I.P. Belokonskiy, S.L. Chudnovsky, F.I. Kon, E.V. Korsh, P.N. Lepeshinsky, P.I. Makushin, N.M. Yadrintsev, G.N. Potanin, L.G. Deutsch. Memories of “significant others” about periodicals employees: N.M. Jadrintsev, G.N. Potanin, V.J. Shishkova, should also be attracted. Memoirs of journalists reflect the evolution of the perception of their own place in the Siberian periodicals, and also represent the authors’ “final or ultimate model” of their professional activity. The memories of editors and staff members should be distinguished, due to the breadth of the topics covered. Memoir texts contain information about the features of the formation of the newspaper’s personnel, editorial installations, the peculiarities of writing texts, cooperation with specific metropolitan and regional publications. Ego-documents are full of various stories about socially active life of journalists, their participation in the organization of public events, literary evenings, parties, which was a way to include their “self” in the communicative space of the region.
