Military Proceedings in the Army Units at the Territory of Siberia in the 18th Century: Official Mechanism and Real Practice

 DOI:10.31518/2618-9100-2018-1-6

This article focuses on the functions of military judicial departments in the Russian regular army units stationed in Siberia in 18th century. The author reviews accusatory cases and sentences shedding light on the functioning mechanisms of these departments. It appears that higher military command (Siberian Corps command, general-audit expedition of War Collegium) often reduced sentences rendered by regiment courts, if the accused served in those units. In some cases the commanders bore disciplinary responsibility because of their subordinates’ crimes, and sometimes even civil authorities were involved in investigation and court procedures.
