Metropolitan Innoсent (Veniaminov) and the Spiritual Life of the Sverbeev Family in Moscow: Based on Materials from the Epistolary Archive

 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2025-3-4

The article examines the relationship and communication between the Sverbeev family and Archbishop Innocent of Moscow, later Metropolitan. This personal correspondence covers a variety of issues related to spiritual and socio-political life. Of particular significance is the correspondence between the archbishop and the young nobleman N.D. Sverbeev (1829−1860), concerning service in Siberia, his perception of the region, and various aspects of religious life. Sverbeev’s thoughts on the Orthodox Church compared to other Christian denominations, as well as his personal spiritual experiences, characterize his worldview, which was shared by people in his social circle. Letters to Archbishop Innocent from Europe discuss the spiritual life of Europeans and Lent, as well as general Christian behavior. The correspondents also discuss a book by I.S. Belustin on the problems of the rural clergy. Siberia, as a place of great opportunities and service to the fatherland, is a recurring theme in all of the correspondence. There is a stark contrast between Russia and Siberia, where Siberia acts as a counterpoint to “Russia”, with its inertia and lack of opportunities for growth. Some of N.D. Sverbeev’s letters from 1858−1859 were travelogues, observations by a traveler in Europe, intended to introduce St. Innocent to the customs and way of life of Catholic and Protestant countries. The Sverbeev letters provide an insight into the Christian beliefs of two generations of the noble family: the father, D.N. Sverbeev (1799−1874), a retired diplomat and admirer of Metropolitan Filaret, and the mother, E.A. Sverbeeva (1808−1892), who was the hostess of a Moscow salon and a devout Orthodox Christian. Their sons were also moderately religious, seeing faith in the context of service and personal duty. The article reveals the Sverbeev family’s attitudes towards St. Innocent and compares them with those of his predecessor, Metropolitan Filaret (Drozdov). After St. Innocent’s death, the Sverbeevs repeatedly helped his children and grandchildren, including the future Archpriest John Veniaminov.
