The Role of School in the Daily Life of a Soviet Child during the Great Patriotic War
DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2025-2-11
The article analyzes the role of schools in the adaptation of the younger generation to new living conditions, the restructuring of the educational process at school, the material and personnel problems of teaching staff. The wide range of functions that the school performed during this period overloaded teachers, whose activities were strictly regulated and monitored. The role of a teacher’s personality in the socialization of children during this difficult period is shown, in changing the forms of work with students in the classroom and outside its walls in order to achieve the goals of the school. It was revealed that a significant number of children continued their studies at school, often combining their studies with work on a collective farm or at an industrial enterprise. However, the dropout rate from schools during the war was significant, meaning that the law on universal education in the Krasnoyarsk Territory was not implemented satisfactorily. The rapid maturation of schoolchildren, due to having many responsibilities previously performed by parents, required the children to develop their own survival strategies, limiting but not eliminating children’s entertainment. Despite the persistence of juvenile delinquency during the war years, most of the children grew up to be true patriots of the country, actively participating in mobilizing, socially useful activities conducted under the guidance of teachers. The state strictly controlled the activities of schools, because it clearly understood that the cohesion of society depends on the results of the work of teachers. The role of the school during the war period grew significantly in the lives of its students and their families.
