The work, based on the concept of the public sphere and the theory of communicative action of J. Habermas, identifies the factors and conditions accompanying the representation of historical knowledge in Russia in the public space of the late 20th – first quarter of the 20th centuries. In the process of research, the historical and cultural circumstances of the formation of the bourgeois public sphere and the institutionalization of public history as an important episode of the era of the anthropological turn in the humanities are identified. Similarities, differences and triggers for the formation of the public sphere and its evolution as a “territory” of historical enlightenment in Russia and its regions are revealed. It is suggested that the authoritarian model of organizing public space determined the choice of stories of historical reality, forms and tools of communication of the scientific and educational community and actors of heritage institutions with potential consumers of historical knowledge, broadcast to the broad masses. It has been established that the authoritarian public sphere creates favorable preconditions for supporting the government through the indoctrination of significant events of national history, carried out by public quasi-historical associations affiliated with the state, focusing on the construction of national and regional identities demanded by the political situation, through the approval of commemorations approved by the state and regions. The nationalization of the public sphere is manifested in the correction of the context of the activities of traditional heritage institutions (museums and libraries), the format and practices of popularization work, which manifests itself in a situation of limited potential for dialogue between these institutions and society and minimizes the effect of their educational efforts. The split in the scientific and educational community, which occurred due to sociocultural and generational reasons, during the period under study significantly limits the ability of the corporation of scientists to implement educational practices and creates objective obstacles to various forms of collaboration in the dissemination and popularization of historical knowledge.
