“The Work Was Suffered because of Personal Relationships”: Conflict between Ural Historians in the Preparation of “Essays on the history of the Urals” (“Ocherki Istorii Urala”) (Late 1950s − Early 1960s)
DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2024-5-17
One of the actual issues in the history of Soviet historical science is the study of not only an individual form of research activity, but also a collective one. There is a special interest related to the preparation of collective historical works since the middle of the 20th century, when Soviet historical science received a solid institutional formation and scientific centers remote from Moscow and Leningrad began to take shape. This paper is devoted to the reconstruction of the conflict between Sverdlovsk and Perm historians, who (at different stages) were engaged in the preparation of the collective work “Essays on the history of the Urals” (“Ocherki Istorii Urala”) in the late 1950s − early 1960s. The research is based on a wide range of documentation materials and private letters from Ural and Moscow historians (from the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State Archive of the Sverdlovsk region). The paper examines the circumstances of the creation of the “Essays”, the preparation of the First interregional scientific conference on the history of the Urals, at which the plan and potential authors of the two-volume work were discussed. One of the central places in the article is devoted to the inclusion in the project of researchers from the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences (V.K. Yatsunskiy, B.B. Kafengauz, N.V. Ustyugov, N.I. Pavlenko, A.A. Preobrazhenskiy, A.P. Bazhova, etc.), their relationship with the Ural historians (M.A. Gorlovskiy, V.Ya. Krivonogov and F.S. Gorovoi). In the final part, there is emphasized the need to study the preparation of such collective works on regional history for a deeper understanding the ways of creating collective memory in the USSR.
