The Projects of the American Timber Concessions on the North of Russia in the 1920s

The article is devoted to the study of the projects of the 1922–1923 American timber concessions administered by the Severoles state trust. The authors analyze concession offers in the timber industry of the Russian North, received from the foreign entrepreneurs as of 1924. The status and contents of the American projects are thoroughly analyzed. It is concluded that most of the concessionary projects considered by Severoles can be referred as unsuccessful, as actually only three concessionary agreements were concluded with Russgollandoles, Russangloles and Russnorvegoles. It is said that timber territories within the jurisdiction of Severoles did not receive much attention from American capitalists. By 1924 only two companies from the USA initiated concessionary offerings. Although they were not implemented, as they were more of an exploratory and originally contained no specifics of how timber production should have been organised in accordance with the conditions of the North of Russia. Severoles as a state trust was interested in partners who possessed greater capitals than the American Corporation for Exploitation of Natural Resources and the American Standard Development Corporation.
