The article, based on literary materials and documentary sources from the private archive (Republic of Kazakhstan), the Scientific Archive of the Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and the Foundation “Russian Emigrants in Manchuria” of the Khabarovsk Territory State Archive, is devoted to the Manchurian period in the life of Elena Borisovna Vandrovskaya (1922–2002) – a famous Kazakhstani art critic, museum worker and teacher. A descendant of representatives of the noble Russian surnames Tonkachev and Vandrovsky, Elena Borisovna was born in Harbin and before her marriage in 1946. She lived in Manchuria, studied at the gymnasium and college of the KHSML (1929–1940). From 1946 she lived in the Soviet Union, until 1953 – in Leningrad, where she studied at the Faculty of Theory and History of Art of the Leningrad State Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. After graduation, together with her husband, an artist, she went to Kazakhstan, with which her further half-century life was connected. Since 1953, E.B. Vandrovskaya worked at the Kazakh National Art Gallery named after T.G. Shevchenko (since 1976 – The State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan named after A. Kasteev) and the Alma-Ata Art School named after O. Tansykbayev (formerly the Alma-Ata Theater and Art School named after N.V. Gogol). The article introduces into scientific circulation many new facts related to the life of E.B. Vandrovskaya and her relatives in Manchuria in the first half of the 20th century, which had not previously been reflected in the literature on Russian-Chinese relations. Through the prism of historical events, the features of the formation and formation of the personality of the future art historian, who left a great mark in the culture, science and education of Kazakhstan, are shown.
