DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2020-3-3
The article is devoted to the Berlin strategic offensive operation – one of the largest strategic operations of the great Patriotic war of 1941–1945. It contains an analysis of events related to the creation of the 8th guards army's artillery group, which operated in the direction of the main strike in the Berlin strategic offensive operation. The archival materials contain new facts and give a picture of the first day of fierce fighting on the Kuestrin base area. Based on the research format, the author focused on the issues of creating artillery groups. The quantitative and qualitative growth of artillery as a branch of the Red Army during the war, the increased scale of massing and maneuvering of artillery in the main areas of operations forced the command to look for new forms and methods of managing artillery formations, military units and their groupings. Based on a generalization of the results of operations conducted in 1943–1945 a grouping of artillery, which included the creation of the rifle regiment a regimental artillery group was recognized as the most appropriate to meet the nature of modern warfare and operations. In the infantry division such was a division artillery group, in the infantry corps – corps artillery group and in the army – the army artillery group. As a result, this provided massing of artillery in the army, corps and divisions as a whole. The article does not discuss the organization and conduct of operations and battles.
