In the paper the features of the dynamics and structure of population mortality in the 1990s–2000s in two regions of the Middle Volga region – Penza and Ulyanovsk regions – are analyzed. Mortality indicators are considered by the author in the context of place of residence, age and gender differences. The author ascertained that for the most part of five-year age groups of the urban population of the Ulyanovsk region in the 1990s there was an increase in the overall mortality rate by an average of 1,4 times, and the reduction of this indicator in the 2000s did not make it possible to reverse the negative effect of the first post-Soviet decade. During the period under review, the mortality rate of the population of the Penza region was higher than in the neighboring Ulyanovsk region. The mortality rate of the rural population in both regions turned out to be higher not only than the Middle Volga region, but also the Russian average. The author paid much attention to studying the structure of population mortality in accordance with the current International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). The contribution of various causes of death to the structure of population mortality in the city and rural areas is shown; the main trends and regional specifics of the dynamics of population mortality are identified. It is shown that diseases of the circulatory system, an increase in the number of deaths from road accidents in the Penza region and some other reasons make a more weighty contribution to the mortality structure of the population of the Penza and Ulyanovsk regions in comparison with Russia average. At the same time, mortality from malignant grouths generally fits into the all-Russian dynamics, and mortality from murders and suicides demonstrates a more moderate level compared to both the Middle Volga region and Russia as a whole.
