 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2023-6-4

The article traces the activities of the merchant M.K. Sidorov and the Pechora Company in the lower reaches of the Pechora within the Pustozersk volost of the Mezen uyezd in the 1860s–1870s, based on, among other things, newly identified archival sources. Sidorov’s projects are considered such as creating conditions for the development of shipping, the connection of the Pechora Region with Siberia, and the arrangement of the infrastructure of the region for the export of timber by sea, including the construction of port points and harbors. A description of Alexseevka, where the office of the Pechora Company was located, is given. Preparations for the celebration of the anniversary of Peter I, the organization of a visit to Pechora by the chamberlain of the Austro-Hungarian Court Count Wilczek, the relations of M.K. Sidorov with local and county authorities and the peasant community are analyzed as well. The author concludes that the communal management system substantially hindered the industrial development of the region, while the severity of natural and climatic conditions, the insufficient development of many projects of M.K. Sidorov along with the finiteness of his capital led to the termination of the activities of the Pechora Company in the region in general and in Pustozerye in particular.
