Vologda Roots of the Origin of M.K. Sidorov

 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2023-6-2

The article tells about two important matters of the biography of the famous Russian entrepreneur M.K. Sidorov: his origin on the maternal side and the geography of his places of residence during his childhood and adolescence in Arkhangelsk. As a result of genealogical research, Sidorov’s mother was proven to be coming from the line of the Mitropolovs, a Vologda family of merchants, who played an important role in the local community in the 19th century. The article determines the reasons for the elevation of the Mitropolovs from the Vologda merchant class and their position in the local city government bodies. The economic interests that led Sidorov’s maternal ancestors to permanently reside in Arkhangelsk, which was one of the largest international seaports of the Russian Empire, are revealed. Elena Nikolaevna Sidorova (nee Mitropolova) was discovered to have been the abbess of one of the famous monasteries of the North, the Shenkursky Holy Trinity, for more than 20 years, under the name of Feofania. In addition, the lost and preserved objects of cultural heritage, such as the architectural monuments that were directly related to the personality of both Sidorov himself and his relatives, were identified, as well as the estates mentioned in the Arkhangelsk Quarterly Book in 1828 belonging to the Sidorov and Mitropolov families. Currently, a stone mansion which belonged to the grandfather of M.K. Sidorov has been preserved in Arkhangelsk on the waterfront of the Northern Dvina. After the death of her husband, Sidorov’s grandmother P.D. Mitropolova submitted the building for the establishment of a nautical school. Now this memorial complex is the building of the Academician N.P. Laverov Arctic Research Center.
