The Economic and Gold Mining Activities of the Yeniseysk Merchant Ivan Dmitrievich Cheremnykh in Terms of Yenisey Taiga Region Development

The article examines the entrepreneurship of a merchant Ivan Dmitrievich Cheremnykh, who lived in Yeniseysk in the second half of the 19th century, concerning the impact of his economic initiatives on the economy and infrastructure of the Yenisey taiga region. I.D. Cheremnykh first served as the manager of the mines of Viktor I. Bazilevskiy, and later he himself became one of the largest gold miners of the Yeniseysk province, whose activities attracted the attention and received an ambiguous assessment from contemporaries, and nowadays still remains a new field for research. The results of the analysis of archival documents that had not been previously involved by researchers are presented. In particular, they include the petitions of I.D. Cheremnykh addressed to Emperor Alexander II on the construction of a new road to the mines of the North Yenisei Mining District, correspondence with the Yenisey provincial surveyor on leasing graphite areas in the Turukhansk region, the case of the opening of gold mines. Despite the fact that the main activity of I.D. Cheremnykh was related to the gold industry, according to the information contained in the sources mentioned above, it can be concluded that the scope of his interests was much wider and included, among other things, the development of merchant shipping and graphite deposits. The economic transformations he undertook have always been aimed at modernizing and optimizing the technology of extraction and sale of minerals, and intensifying the work of mines. The biography of Ivan Dmitrievich Cheremnykh is a vivid example of a birth of an independent entrepreneur from a mining employee.
