Materials for the Lineage of M.K. Sidorov and His Family: On the Documents from The State Archive of the Arkhangelsk Region

The article, based on a large complex of archival materials and other sources, traces the biography of one of the pioneers of the study and colonization of the northern and Siberian territories, Mikhail Konstantinovich Sidorov (1823–1887). A native of Arkhangelsk, since childhood he absorbed the spirit of entrepreneurship that reigned in his family. His grandfather Alexander Mefodievich served as a stockbroker in the Arkhangelsk trading port, through which trade took place both with European countries and with residents of the Murmansk outskirts. His father and uncle, who came from the merchant class, also carried out commercial transactions, involving Mikhail in this. Communication with Arkhangelsk resident V.A. Popov gave Mikhail Sidorov direction in search of application of his strength and knowledge, and he leaves for Siberia, where, along with V. Latkin, he achieves material and familial well-being. Brought up on the laws of Orthodoxy (the Sidorov family was deeply religious), Mikhail Konstantinovich preferred to spend his money on good deeds such as charity. In addition, part of the capital earned went towards organizing and supporting activities to explore the natural resources of the North and Siberia. The state archive of the Arkhangelsk region has preserved many files with correspondence from M.K. Sidorov with the local administration on the development of sea and river routes of communication in the North. His discoveries in mining in Siberia pushed for the development of industry and infrastructure in these remote places.
