 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2023-5-17

The article reveals the information content of commercial announcements as a means of promoting goods and services in the local market, published in the periodicals of the Tomsk province (1896–1913). Advertising was especially strong with product sales and informed readers about the range of products, current prices, new arrivals, sales and discounts. According to publications, non-food products were widely represented on the local market, among which the leading positions were occupied by the cultural and household products, residential and industrial premises, household and baggage and saddlery goods, clothing (clothing and knitwear), hats, shoes, hosiery and leather goods. Then, by a large margin, food products followed among which the most advertised were mineral waters, non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, tobacco, confectionery, groceries flavoring products, and meat products. The class of medical goods included advertising of medical devices and supplies and medicines. Advertising for agricultural products represented trade in horses, piglets, grain, seeds and hops. The most advertised services included the following points: subscription to newspapers and magazines, rental of housing and industrial premises, hired work, medical and educational services, and insurance. Announcements on the pages of periodicals indicate that Siberian and metropolitan entrepreneurs offered a diverse range of goods and services to the population of the Tomsk province. The advertisement presented not only the general idea on the economic and socio-cultural specifics of the region, but also the system-wide changes which were characteristic on the all-Russian level.
