 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2023-5-15

The article focuses on the activity of women entrepreneurs in the Nizhnii Novgorod province at the end of the 19th century. According to the directory “Factory industry of Russia. The list of factories and plants” (containing information for 1895), 38 industrial enterprises belonged to women from the Nizhnii Novgorod province. The largest number of them were in the food industry (10 confectionery, brewing and vodka enterprises), in the leather industry (9 enterprises produced harnesses, mittens, etc.), in mechanical engineering and metalworking (6 enterprises). Women also worked in the field of soap making, and electrical engineering. Most of the enterprises were inherited from fathers, husbands, and other relatives. For example, Olga Karpova and her brother received the largest machine-building plant in Nizhnii Novgorod and a shipping company under the will of their childless uncle, merchant Ustin Kurbatov.
