The political and economic crisis in the USSR in the 1980s had a significant impact on all spheres of life, including migration dynamics. However, many conditions and factors determining the direction and movement of migration flows at the local level have remained unchanged. Therefore, the dialectical disclosure of the situation on the ground is of interest. Krasnoyarsk is a large city, a significant industrial and scientific center, and the most important transport hub in the east of the country. Its social development is of great importance for the evolution of the economy of the macroregion. A characteristic feature of the demography of the city in the period under review is a decrease in the birth rate with high mortality. Therefore, mechanical growth played an important role. A significant number of migrants from various regions of the USSR, including Asian republics, came to the region and its center every month. At the same time, a high outflow of population from Krasnoyarsk was constantly observed. The presented article is based on the materials and documents of the Krasnoyarsk Regional Statistical Commission, on the mechanical movement of the population in the 1980s. As a result of the work, authors came to the following conclusions. The previously formed migration exchange routes that operated between Krasnoyarsk and the Asian republics continued to function in the 1980s, but the number and quality of migrants changed. Now their movement was determined mainly by personal priorities. Migrants from Asia were able to adapt to the changes in the economy of Krasnoyarsk, as their number increased, despite the decline in construction and production activities. Ethnic communities also increased quantitatively, making the social portrait of the city more multifaceted. At the same time, the situation has not changed significantly for Krasnoyarsk. The positive mechanical growth, which was dominated by rural residents, and the continued active departure of citizens, including qualified specialists, contributed to the numerical growth of the population, but reduced its potential.
