The Yihetuan People’s Liberation movement in China (1898–1901), which received the name “boxer rebellion” in journalism and then in Western European historiography, is covered in sufficient detail in research articles and monographs concerning the problems of international relations in the Far East. Its origin, ideology, organizational form, program slogans, social composition, relations with local authorities and the central government, periodization are studied. For a historian studying Russian foreign policy, the reflection of the events of that time in the domestic periodical press is of great interest. This makes it possible to find out the degree of awareness of contemporaries about the phenomenon itself, the attitude towards it, its potential impact on Russia’s relations with a neighboring country. Based on the materials of the newspaper “Novoye Vremya” (“The New Time”) – one of the most widely circulated and well-informed periodicals of private publication – the structure of information about the “boxer rebellion” is traced: its volume, dynamics, forms and genres of published materials. They are diverse and multifaceted: telegrams, messages, reprints from foreign newspapers, historical reviews, analytical articles, photographs, drawings, satirical graphics. Taken as a whole, this information creates a voluminous representation of both the phenomenon itself and its assessments by the newspaper and those theses that were inspired by contemporaries. Thanks to these materials, a domestic reader could follow the course of events and form their attitude towards them.
