Ethnographic Film in the Late USSR: Articulation of Issue

 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2022-5-6

The article analyzes ethnographic film as phenomenon of the late Soviet intellectual culture. The context of emergence of such kind of phenomenon, and its links with other phenomena of the late Soviet culture (in particular, ethnographic concert) are considered. Authors try to describe the range of institutions and individuals involved in the process of creating this kind of film. Information on the practices of film screenings, and development of relevant audiences is provided. The important film screening held within the framework of the VII International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnographic Sciences in Moscow (1964), the experience of Soviet Estonian film ethnography and Tomsk film ethnography of the late Soviet period are analyzed. The question about identification of an ethnographic (folkloric) film, determination of its boundaries and place within existing at that time academic practices and beyond, within wider amateur film makers and audience communities, is raised. The role of research institutions, museums and universities, as well as amateur film associations and film studios in the process of production of ethnographic (folkloric) films are also under consideration. Authors conclude, that it is possible to consider the late Soviet ethnographic film at three levels: as a part of the research process (related to research expeditions and field work), as an effect of many communicative interactions involving various institutions and individuals, and, finally, as the creation, and, at the same time, the important attribute of the late Soviet intellectual culture as such.
