The Film “Earth” (1930) as a Reflection of Transformation of Property Relations

The article analyzes the symbolic and visual series of the film “Earth” in order to identify markers of changes in property relations, primarily in land ownership as the main factor of industrial life. This film was created at the early stage of collectivization of agriculture, which allowed the director A.P. Dovzhenko to capture the most vivid impressions of the new village politics. It is shown that the main attention in the film is paid to the elimination of individual attitudes to land ownership, the destruction of the personification of land use. For this purpose, a comparison of the elements of land use of traditional peasant society and the first stages of collective farm construction is carried out, in more detail in this regard, the attitude to such an important object – a symbol of proprietary positions – as the border is highlighted. This plot is interpreted on the materials of village folklore. The authors drew attention to the role of penetration of capital into the village as a turning point in the change of property relations. In addition, the text of the article provides data on the state policy in the field of cinematography in the 1930s, evidence of the organization of film distribution in rural areas. Some of the materials for the article were extracted from the collections of the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History, periodicals and reference publications.
