DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2022-4-17
The explanatory note of the veterinary department of the Altai Regional Agro-Industrial Committee “To the veterinary report on the Gorno-Altai Autonomous Region for 1986”, found in the funds of the State Archive of the Altai Territory, is introduced into scientific circulation. Its content is important for understanding the development of the agricultural sector in the second half of the 1980s. The publication is preceded by an introductory article, which analyzes the dynamics of the region’s animal husbandry in the last Soviet five-year plan. The pace of development of animal husbandry in this period was significant. The increase in meat production was mainly ensured by the early maturing sub-sectors – poultry and pig breeding. The intensive development of animal husbandry became possible, among other things, thanks to achievements in breeding. The Gorno-Altai breed of downy goats was created, work was underway to create a breed of semi-fine-fleeced sheep. Beef cattle breeding, sheep breeding and goat breeding were further developed. A significant part of livestock production was produced in the Gorno-Altai Autonomous Region, where cattle breeding was the leading industry. The region had a specific structure of livestock with a predominance of sheep and goat breeding, as well as cattle, with practically undeveloped industrial pig and poultry breeding. The influence of natural and climatic factors (mountainous terrain, sharply continental climate) was also significant. The Gorno-Altai Autonomous Region made a significant contribution to the national fund, producing about a third of the volume of goat down, a significant amount of sheep wool. Despite the increase in the production of meat and other livestock products, the situation with the organization of veterinary services for livestock farms remained difficult. The construction of specialized premises was carried out at a slow pace, a number of agricultural enterprises lacked the necessary equipment, and there was a shortage of qualified veterinary personnel.
