Economic State of Machine and Tractor Stations of West Siberian Region in 1930s

 DOI: 10.31518/2618-9100-2022-4-11

Author reveals economic status and financial condition of machine and tractor stations of West Siberian region in 1930s. It is shown that the presence of several sources of financing (State Bank, Agricultural Bank and collective farms) and independence of station management led to decrease in state control over economic state of MTS. Such a system was justified by the need to develop economic accounting. Many stations ended financial year with significant losses, subsequently covered by the state. MTS were not only economic, but also political organizations that controlled activities of collective farms. This led to increase administrative and economic costs. Poor quality of machinery and constant breakdowns in the midst of agricultural work have led to increase in maintenance and repair costs. Situation was complicated by untimely arrival of new machines to the region, as well as spare parts for them. There were problems with supply of fuels and lubricants, which MTS required much more than planned by official organizations. Financial unprofitability of MTS has become a reason for criticism from both central and regional organizations. In 1938, state authorities reorganized financing of MTS, depriving directorate of economic independence, and placing their financial activities under full control. Most elements of cost accounting were abolished. However, this system did not turn out to be ideal, which led to discussion about its further change in post-war years.
